Senior Community Services Employment Program
FUNDING: Virginia Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS)
COVERAGE AREA: Counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward
PURPOSE: The Title V Program places individuals over the age of 55 in employment training sites to gain employment skills. The goal of the program is to enable participants to learn employment skills to obtain unsubsidized employment. There are 25 slots available over a nine-county region.
SELECTION CRITERIA: Participants are approved based on a “Most-In-Need” progress giving priority to individuals who have a disability, Veterans, rural citizens, limited English skills, limited literacy, have low employment prospects and must meet Federal Poverty guidelines. Participants also must have been unemployed for a period of at least six months.
There are income requirements and a duration limit of four years. Participants are provided on the job and off the job training opportunities. Training sites are not-for-profits and government offices. For profit businesses are used as placements in a few instances.
FUNDING PERIOD: The Title V funding year is July 1 – June 30 and funds must be spent in that fiscal year.
